“I was broke – but I knew there had to be a way to success” – Paul Conway, PMC Telecom

Paul Conway was poverty-stricken and was struggling to pay his bills. Now he’s a millionaire businessman with his own company – and has revealed the secret to his success…

A young market stall trader who was tired of “making ends meet” has revealed how he turned his life around and became a millionaire businessman with his own company.

Paul Conway from Manchester spent 15 years struggling to pay his bills whilst making his living selling electrical items on a rainy market stall close to his home, and became restless at the thought of never being able to support his family.

The then 20-year-old took the somewhat uncommon decision to give up seeing his friends at the weekend, and swapped the pub for a home office where he built his own website to sell his products.

A decade and a half later, Paul is running a thriving telecoms company in Whitefield, Manchester, which has created 30 local jobs and has brought him to a place where he never has to worry about supporting his family again.

The company PMC Telecom (named after himself, Paul Marc Conway) is now one of the leading telecoms companies in the country, selling telecoms hardware and office electronics.

The secret to his success, he says, is not to do with luck, but about wanting something enough and being willing to put in the blood, sweat and tears to get an idea off the ground.

“I worked seven days a week in the beginning, it was exhausting and the people around me were telling me to calm down a bit. There’s a fine line between passion and obsession, and I think in this case I was passionate about it. I have a family to support and I wanted to make sure they never have to worry about money again. What better drive can you have than that?” He said.

He added: “It was the sort of time when technology was changing its face as the internet was only just really taking off. But even so, I don’t believe that I was lucky, I believe that putting in a ridiculous amount of work in the beginning of something sets you up later. You get out what you put in. You don’t always get it right, you might fail, you might lose all your money. The point I’m making is, a young, 20-something getting his head down instead of going out to the pubs might have seemed mad at the time, but now I am secure and able to support my family, I run my own business and we are all financially stable. Was it worth the sacrifice? Of course, it was.”

“I’m not one of those people who says look at me, I’m successful. Not at all. But if I can go from standing behind those cold stalls on the market to sitting in my managing director’s chair, then anyone can.

“I love my business, and the staff are like a little family. PMC Telecom is my baby and I’m proud of how far it has come. Business is tough in this world, but if you’re going to do it, I can think of no better place than Manchester.”
