Most people know hemp primarily in connection with the intoxication effect. If you are only interested in this, you are not necessarily in the right place on this page. Instead, I focus on other results and uses, especially hemp as food.

The plant’s hemp fibres can be used to make paper and textiles, for example. The seeds and leaves are traditionally used as food.

The range of hemp-containing foods is growing steadily and is becoming increasingly widespread. There are various offers such as tea from cannabis leaves, hemp flour, cannabis oil, hemp protein powder, beverages such as beer and lemonade made from cannabis and of course the cannabis seeds themselves.

The cannabis seeds are approx. 3 mm large seeds and they are harvested from the hemp plant. They are advertised as superfoods or as food supplements with valuable ingredients and health effects.

There is a lot, but not everything.

Effect: Are cannabis seeds healthy?

If I had to give a definite answer as to whether cannabis seeds are healthy: yes, they are.

Fortunately, I can say a little more about this. Because what does that mean exactly? What or for what do the cannabis seeds help?

Cannabis seeds are said to have numerous health effects in advertising and on Internet forums. Among other things, they are supposed to help the muscles to recover after a load, to help them lose weight and to lower their blood pressure, their cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

However, this has not been scientifically proven. Therefore, the EU has so far made no statement about the possible health effects of cannabis seeds.

But don’t worry! Hemp seeds are said to have many different effects. Among other things, they are perfect to:

  • Inhibit inflammation (fatty acid profile including gamma-linolenic acid)
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Counteract cell ageing
  • and much more.

They support the body in metabolic processes and normal body function. As a natural food, they can promote your health as part of a healthy diet.

As a food, they do not act like a drug, so it will be difficult to establish clear scientific correlations with specific effects. But as long as we don’t want to sell cannabis seeds, that shouldn’t bother us.

Nevertheless, they have a positive effect on our health, just like many other natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc.

But what’s in the cannabis seeds?

Ingredients and nutritional values

In fact, we find several essential nutrients in hemp seeds, including iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium, manganese, copper, vitamin E and B1. Vitamin B2 only in small quantities.

Furthermore, the seeds have a high proportion of essential amino acids, which makes them a good source of protein. Valuable fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid and antioxidants, round off the whole.

Cannabis seeds peeled or unshelled?

The husk of the seeds can be eaten without hesitation. Due to the rather hard shell, the hemp seeds taste even nuttier and are very crispy. Peeled seeds, on the other hand, are significantly softer and more delicate in taste.

In addition to the taste, one big difference is that the unpeeled seeds contain a lot more fibre. As can be seen in the table above, the other macro nutritional values ​​are otherwise not very different.

Whether peeled or not peeled mainly depends on the taste, depending on which dish is being conjured up, peeled or unshelled hemp seeds are more suitable. Since the trend tends towards an undersupply of valuable fibre, the unpeeled version should be used more often. It is also the cheaper one.

Do cannabis seeds have side effects?

In general, no real side effects are known. Especially the classic gluten and lactose are not included, and nut allergy sufferers also do well.

However, allergies can never be ruled out. Yet, when it comes to hemp, most people have entirely different concerns about side effects.

Use, preparation and recommended intake

Cannabis seeds can be used in many different ways. Probably the simplest: just sprinkle over the food, alternatively, simply in the smoothie.

The seeds go exceptionally well with muesli, salad, smoothie and yoghurt, otherwise, only as a snack.

How much hemp seed should you eat?

There is no real recommendation. However, hemp seeds can be a useful addition to your healthy diet.

As with all other foods, you shouldn’t overdo it. If you eat several hundred grams of a nut variety every day, you shouldn’t be too surprised about a nut allergy. Of course, it doesn’t have to happen, but I would recommend more variability.

A few grams may be eaten daily. Most people will not have any problems with 100 g.
