3 tips for SEO on a budget
Not everyone has the budget to invest 10k on SEO every month for their business. While this is desired, sometimes you need to take it one step at a time so we’ve been in contact with Harvest Digital who offers a range of different digital marketing services, on their top 3 Search Engine Optimization tips for you who just started your business or if you’re thinking to start very soon.
Keyword Research
You need to know who your customer is, what they are searching for in the search engines to find your website and what keywords you would like to rank for. This is very crucial as it is pointless trying to rank for the term ‘Pink fluff’ when you sell bicycles online. Tools like Google Keyword Planner can give you an indication on the search volumes of the keywords you are looking to rank for and how competitive those terms are.
We can see from the picture that hybrid bikes gather approximately 18,100 monthly searches which would be good for you, your aim is to get as many of that as possible. If the keyword you want to rank for is only getting 30 searches a month for example it may be best to think of a new one that will be able to generate more traffic to your website.
Add Keywords to your website
The next step would be for you add your chosen keywords to your website. Again, there’s no point trying to rank for ‘hybrid bikes’ and it’s not even seen once on your page! Just be careful not to use the term too much, keyword stuffing which is an old SEO technique where people would write long articles and include their keywords as much as possible will have a negative effect on your rankings.
An example of keyword stuffing would be: “We sell hybrid bikes. Our hybrid bikes are handmade. If you’re thinking of buying hybrid bikes or would like to look at our range of hybrid bikes then contact our hybrid bikes team at hybrid.bikes@example.com” While you may be thinking that would be silly to do, people still use these tactics only because they’ve been advised by bad SEO agencies who use quick methods for quick results which leave you in a worse place eventually than when you first started.
Build relevant links to your website
Many years ago when keyword stuffing was in full flow, links would be exchanged like Haribo for Haribo; I link to you and you link to me was the way it worked and with a lot of links, people would see themselves shoot up the rankings. What you want is natural links to your site and 1 way to get that would be to have great content that people would naturally want to link with. Doing this will increase the strength of your website and when the search engines see that many people are linking to this good piece of content they will put you up there for more people to see.
Hopefully, these tips have been useful for you but always remember, with SEO though you may do good, you never know what your competitors are doing so it may be good to outsource your SEO to an agency that can work on your site full time and get the latest updates that they can implement to your website to get you up the search engines. While we wish we could give you more, we can’t as there are two rules for success:
- Never tell everything you know.
- Re-read number 1
