Lemon Creative’s zest for print wins national award
Drew Selman, whose graphic design business based near Canterbury, was thrilled to make it to the November awards ceremony at London’s Café de Paris, where he rubbed shoulders with over 200 of the print industry’s leading lights; and even more delighted when they voted his brochure the winner of its category, with nearly 40% of the vote.
Over the summer, Earth Island Publishing Ltd, producer of the magazines Print Solutions and Packaging Solutions, launched the national competition ‘The Solutions Awards’. It was open to everyone in the UK graphic arts industry (printers, designers, converters, brand owners, creatives, finishers, paper nerds, IT whizz, suppliers, eco warriors, students, apprentices – anyone who just thinks print is smashing!)
Entries had to be ‘solutions’ developed for the entrants’ own or their clients/customers’ business issues. This wide brief encompassed innovative projects, cost-saving exercises and products, and entries were expected to show how best practice, customer service and creative thinking combined for great results.
The judges were also looking for exciting entries, showing new and innovative ideas – not just beautiful print – with a real-world solution to a customer problem. They wanted to hear about the story behind the product.
Lemon Creative’s company booklet was designed in-house to promote their services and portfolio.
The product of several months’ research, it’s a jacket pocket-sized booklet with vibrant imagery, explanatory text and client testimonials in a digital printed form.
Drew Selman, Director of Lemon Creative, said, “We’d seen delegates at business fairs struggling with the typical large bags, booklets, folders and cheap-looking disposable printed materials. So we designed a neat, pocket-sized solution that has a really tactile soft touch to it, along with a secure cover with magnets that ‘click’ satisfyingly into place. Its powerful imagery and contrasting black and yellow brand colours help it stand out from other promotional material at shows.”
Drew continued, “People are really thrilled to have one given to them; they comment on how creative and different it is and how they’ll keep it, rather than throw it away after, or even at, the event. Most importantly, it has generated lots of new business leads for us – a totally successful solution to our own requirements.”
Public vote sees Lemon Creative through to the final
Drew heard in early October that the booklet was on the shortlist of five in the ‘Books’ category. Online public voting then determined the final three that went to the awards ceremony at the Café de Paris, London in November.
Drew said, “We told friends, family and business associates about our entry and the voting process, kept our fingers crossed and in late October heard we were on our way to the final!” Online voting continued up to a week before the event, with keypad voting at the event itself, with thousands of votes across all the categories.
“On Tuesday 18th November we were entertained, wined and dined over lunch at the amazing Café de Paris. The ‘Books’ category announced first – everyone had 10 seconds to vote for their choice of the final three. Probably the longest 10 seconds of my life. Lemon Creative achieved 38% of the accumulated votes to win!
“With a fanfare of music and lights Mario Dilieto from Stora Enso, the sponsor of the books category, presented our award. It’s beautiful, a work of art, created by Helen from ‘The Perfect Fold’ – a book with every page edge folded in such a manner as to reveal the word ‘print’ when viewed edge on.
“I’m very proud, and hope that our achievement inspires others to think creatively about solutions to a brief, and that it raises the profile of Lemon Creative as one of Kent’s leading (award winning) Graphic Design and Branding agencies.”
